The 5th December 2013 has been embedded in every South African’s memory and heart as the day that the father of the country’s democracy departed. Even though it was expected after a long illness, the pain experienced by many was none the less significant. As a nation, we reflected on his legacy and related it to our lives and how we may have fallen short in comparison. Aside from the mourning that has brought South Africans together, there has been a collective sense of gratitude for his life and his deeds. What he preached, he lived. His message on forgiveness and achieving the impossible are not just words but his life. He taught South Africans to forgive each other and strive to create a new nation that is unified.
With that said we thank you Madiba for tirelessly working to make the world a better place for generations to come. We thank you for showing us that it is not where you come from that determines what you can achieve but your mindset and determination. We thank you for showing us that being steadfast and focused does yield good results. We thank you for showing us that as a unit we can achieve much but when divided there will be chaos.
As we celebrate the life of a legend may his life and deeds abide in our hearts and remind us to not ever live a mundane and insignificant life. Wherever we are, let us each purpose to make a difference in someone else’s life as we strive to keep the legacy of Madiba alive.
May you rest in peace Tata.
